Deadly vehicle bomb blast rocks Baghdad

Baghdad’s bloody protests mark resumption of Shia power struggle

"A terrorist vehicle bomb attack struck near auto dealerships in Bayaa and resulted in the deaths of 45 people", a spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command said in a statement. A day earlier, four people died in a auto bombing.

The bombing targeted cars agents and dealers, according to a police officer and medical official.

Destroyed vehicles are seen at the site of a auto bomb explosion in Baghdad, Iraq, on January 24, 2017.

It's the second time this week an explosion has hit auto markets, Reuters reports, "suggesting the group has found it easier to leave vehicles laden with explosives in places where hundreds of other vehicles are parked". In an online statement ISIL said it carried out the strike.

Government officials have said that at least 45 people were killed and almost 50 other were wounded in the attack on the Iraqi capital.

It was the third blast to hit the Iraqi capital in three days, the BBC reported.

A police officer was killed and seven others wounded during clashes between supporters of powerful Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and security forces, the security operations command said Saturday.

Hospital officials confirmed the casualty toll for the attack, for which there was no immediate claim of responsibility.
