Senate confirms Mulvaney as budget chief

Mulvaney passes next-to-last hurdle for budget post, will learn fate Thursday morning

South Carolina's Mick Mulvaney will learn whether he will become the next American budget chief at a vote now scheduled for 7 a.m. Thursday.

Romina Boccia, deputy director of the Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal in an email that Mulvaney has a proven track record of conservative of leadership.

"Congressman Mulvaney's beliefs, as revealed by his poor record on defense spending, are fundamentally at odds with President Trump's commitment to rebuild our military", said McCain on the Senate floor.

Mulvaney's penchant for slashing government spending might prove a challenge for not only federal agencies but also for the head of the executive branch - specifically, he could essentially block the implementation of the increasingly unlikely $1 trillion infrastructure plan Trump promised during his campaign.

"He said to me in a one-on-one meeting how he would prioritize the debts he would pay if he defaulted on the debt", said Sen.

Delays in processing Mulvaney's nomination appear to be contributing to a lag in producing Trump's much-awaited budget plan for the fiscal year that begins October 1.

During his confirmation hearings, however, Mulvaney said repeatedly he was prepared to carry out the president's agenda, not necessarily his own.

That makes him the gatekeeper for deciding most of the big questions of how the federal government operates.

Other Republicans see Mulvaney as someone who can help President Trump balance the budget. " ... I am confident he will be a great partner in the White House as we work towards a balanced budget".

"Congressman Mulvaney has spent his last six years in the House of Representatives pitting the national debt against our military", McCain said. Senate committee members still voted along party lines to advance his nomination to the full chamber.

Mulvaney has been in the U.S. House since 2011.
