TSN to provide coverage of Special Olympics World Winter Games

For some athletes it was fairly new, but others have been part of Special Olympics for years.

She'll be returning home to Alaska with a gold medal.

There was bowling, basketball, swimming and a host of other sports, including cross country skiing.

- Special Olympics athletes got their chance to compete at the state championships in Grants Pass today.

Minister Linares, who will be unable to attend, wishes the athletes and coaches well: "Annie Risso and her team make Gibraltar proud on a daily basis and their participation at the World Winter Games will be no different".

Rachel Mulligan practiced with many other cross country skiers from across the US, many of whom will be making the trip to the World Games with her.

She's in Austria now to compete in this year's world competition. "Team Ireland has two teams and it's proving very competitive". "I'm excited to meet a lot of new people".

"I think that just qualifying and being able to go in the first place - to be a part of that Olympic experience - that's the most exciting part of it, because that's a very small club", Fletcher said.

"I hope that everybody would watch for me and cheer me on", she said. She serves as an ambassador for the organization, often speaking to groups one or two times a week about the merits of Special Olympics.

Special Olympics goal is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.
