Former advisor to Jason Kenney's leadership campaign charged with assault

Alberta Progressive Conservatives set to pick new leader at convention

Starke and Nelson ran on promises to follow the wishes of party members who voted just a year ago to not merge with the Wildrose, but instead rebuild the PCs.

Alberta's chief electoral officer Glen Resler has long said assets and cash can not be transferred between political parties in the province, though in the past newly elected Progressive Conservative leader Jason Kenney has hinted at a legal challenge to that.

I suppose the Kenney PCs can now argue they were jeering at the genial veterinarian from Vermilion because he dared to suggest there's a road to re-election for the NDP, but it sure sounded from up here in Edmonton as if they were endorsing homophobia and attacks on women.

It brought Ottawa organization and strategy to Alberta, picking up longtime conservatives who knew the lay of the land and knew who would support the unite plan and convince others to do the same.

Kenney, who entered the race well before it officially kicked off in late 2016, has been running on a mandate of unity, seeking to merge the party with the Wildrose, and form one united conservative party in an effort to quell a second term for Rachel Notley and the NDP when the 2019 election rolls around.

While Notley didn't rule out calling a snap election before conservatives figure out their party, her focus right now isn't sending Albertans to the polls.

It's going to be a long, winding, and complex path to unity.

Jean is sitting down with Jason Kenney on Monday to talk about Kenney's goal to unite the right, after he won the PC leadership over the weekend in Calgary.

Later in the evening, each candidate gave one last push to garner the support of the almost 1,700 delegates eligible to vote and are expected to attend.

Economic Development Minister Deron Bilous, at the convention to represent the governing NDP, said if Kenney wants to ratchet back spending, he needs to specify to Albertans which projects and programs he'll cut.

For long-time Alberta Tories who embrace the word "progressive" in the PC name, this is the morning after a big night out; heads are aching, there are hazy memories of better times past and everyone's feeling a little bit queasy about where their party is headed.

"I never walked away".

"I want what is best for Alberta, not by duct taping two political parties together but renewing, rebuilding right here, right now the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta".

Wildrose party Leader Brian Jean said he's open to a meeting with the new leader on unity as early as Monday, but has stressed that any new conservative party will be created under a Wildrose legal framework, with the approval of Wildrose members.

Speaking Sunday, Kenney met with the PC party board and party president Katherine O'Neill.

He has said he is confident he has the majority of votes needed to win a majority in delegated voting at the Telus Convention Centre. Both Starke and Nelson each indicated they would need to scoop up some last minute delegates in order to win.

"Conservatives old and new want us to pursue the path of reuniting the conservative movement".

Interim PC leader Ric McIver will remain the party's leader in the legislature.
