Indian delegation meets Pakistan officials for Indus Commission

APBF asks govt to oppose Indian dams in IoK

A 10-member Indian delegation led by Indus Water Commissioner P K Saxena arrived here yesterday to attend the the meeting.

Pakistan minister for water and power Khawaja Mohammed Asif reiterated on Monday that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) was an global agreement which provided an amicable solution to serious water issues between Pakistan and India. Pakistan had raised objections over the designs of three projects on Chenab it considered being built by India in violation of the 1960 IWT.

Disputed projects such as Miyar, Lower Kalnai, and Pakal Dul will be on the agenda of the 113th Indo-Pak Indus Water Commission conference.

An official said Pakistan formally asked India to share the details of the designs of the three projects and also provide access to Pakistani experts to verify that the Indus Water Treaty was not being violated in the process. Coinciding with the news of the inauguration of the Salma dam, some of them published what they said were plans of further dam building by India in Afghanistan.

The secretary-level talks on Ratal power project would be held next month on April 11-13 in the United States under the aegis of the World Bank. But the World Bank announced late previous year that Pakistan and India should hold bilateral talks.

Taking to media, Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif said all the matters would be discussed with the Indian delegation.

Pakistan, it added, believed that a continuation of the purposeful talks would lead to resolution of the matters at the commission level, in accordance with the provisions of the IWT, which had been a symbol of peaceful management of trans-boundary water resources.

Pakistan on Monday hailed Indian decision to take part in talks on Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and hoped that the meeting would help resolve the standing issues between the two countries.

Indus Water Commission talks between both the countries were last held in May 2015 in New Delhi.

However, the agenda for the meeting, taking place almost six months after India chose to suspend talks on the pact in the wake of the Uri terror attack by Pakistan-based outfits, is yet to be finalised. Pakistani officials said the meeting was held in cordial atmosphere. The delegation later left for Islamabad by road amid high security.
