Joey Logano wins pole for Camping World 500 at Phoenix International Raceway

Phoenix International Raceway

Kyle Busch and Joey Logano had their mandatory meeting with NASCAR Friday morning at Phoenix International Raceway to put last weekend's post-race altercation behind them.

NASCAR called the two drivers together to ensure there would be no carryover after Logano caused Busch to spinout on the final lap of Sunday's Kobalt 400, and Busch retaliated by punching Logano afterward on pit road resulting in a scrum that left Busch bloodied.

Logano won his 18th career pole but first in 17 races in Phoenix. The flat, one-mile track will provide plenty of bumping and grinding, who knows which driver may get loose and create contact.

Kevin Harvick qualified in 23rd for Sunday's race. Just take a look at his career stats at the desert track.

Blaney finished second in this year's Daytona 500; Larson won at MI last year and finished second in the last two Cup races. His teammate Jamie McMurray will round out the top five. It's easy to see why he's the odds-on favorite.

NASCAR chose not to penalize either driver for the post-race confrontation.

"Obviously there's a lot of talent out there", said Martin Truex Jr., victor last week in Las Vegas.

While Truex was impressive, the win was a bit overshadowed by Kyle Busch and Joey Logano.

Jamie McMurray leads active drivers with the most Cup Series starts at Phoenix without visiting victory lane with 27.

"Everything's great. Looking forward to a fantastic weekend here in Phoenix - back to the race track", Busch replied. Johnson (8.96) is the only active driver with average finish inside the top 10 in a minimum of three races.

"I think racing in the heat of the day, when it's hot out, is the best racing, and I think maybe the whole garage may agree", he said.

The age keeps dropping down the grid, and the fourth row consists of Chase Elliott, who is finally old enough to drink, and Erik Jones, who doesn't turn 21 until the end of May. Can he break through on Sunday?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the fall race in 2015 and was fifth at this race past year.

Dale Earnhardt Jr continued where the #88 auto left off last fall when Alex Bowman stole the pole and qualified third with a lap of 136.783 miles per hour.
