Laptops, Other Electronics To Be Banned On Some US-Bound Flights

Royal Jordanian warns about electronics prohibition on US flights

USA authorities are planning to ban passengers traveling on certain US -bound foreign airline flights from carrying on larger electronic devices in response to an unspecified terrorism threat, a USA government official told Reuters.

The tweet, posted March 20, said that "US departments" had issued instructions that from March 21, passengers on Royal Jordanian flights to and from the U.S. would be "strictly prohibited" from taking onboard electronic devices.

The Amman, Jordan-based carrier said that starting Tuesday, March 21 it will only allow phones and medical devices to be carried in the cabin of its flights.

At least two Middle Eastern airlines are telling passengers that laptops, tablet computers and other electronic devices are no longer allowed as carry-on items in flights headed to the U.S., citing orders from USA authorities.

Since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, passengers have had to bring all liquids, gels, pastes and creams packed in containers holding no more than 3.4-ounce containers and placed into a see-through, quart-size bag, and passengers have had to take laptops and other electronics out of their carry-ons and in some cases turn them on to prove they are what they purport to be during the preflight screening process.

According to numerous reports, U.S. authorities today alerted a number of Middle Eastern and African airlines that starting soon, their passengers will have to check any electronic items larger than a cell phone.

The airline serves New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, as well Montreal and Detroit. Then, sometime this afternoon, Royal Jordanian deleted that tweet, further adding to the confusion.

A spokesperson for Homeland Security would not comment on the potential security precautions, but said the department would "provide an update when appropriate".

Meanwhile people are responding to the Royal Jordanian post and seem super frustrated with the sudden rule change. That ban has since been challenged by USA courts. Many commented that the airline would lose customers over this policy. The TSA referred all questions to the DHS.
