Malaysia confirms Kim Jong-nam's identity by using his child's DNA sample

North Korea-Malaysia diplomatic dispute

DNA tests have confirmed that the man killed last month at Kuala Lumpur's airport was Kim Jong-nam, the estranged half-brother of North Korea leader Kim Jong-un, Malayia's deputy prime minister said.

The announcement was made two days after reports emerged that Malaysia used fingerprint data of Jong Nam that they received from Japan to identify his body after he was poisoned with nerve agent VX in Kuala Lumpur on February 13.

"We've given them until April 14 to come back to us with the neutral venue, in the event that the diplomatic situation (between North Korea and Malaysia) is not solved", said John in a press conference at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday. "I again confirm that it is Kim Jong Nam".

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told reporters outside parliament on Tuesday the body has been embalmed so it can be preserved longer.

Prior to the high-profile killing, relations between North Korea and Malaysia had been particularly warm, with a reciprocal visa-free travel deal for visitors.

Zahid also said Malaysia will soon deport fifty North Korean workers who overstayed their visa in the Borneo state of Sarawak.

The strained relationship escalated after Malaysia had evicted the North Korean ambassador from the country, and the Republic swiftly responded by barring Malaysians from leaving its perimeters.

Kim Jong Nam had two wives and children living separately in Beijing and Macau, according to South Korea's intelligence agency. They were among 176 North Koreans working in Sarawak.

It is reported that the North Korean workers are mainly in businesses including coal mining and construction.

Last Friday, police said they had established conclusively the dead man was 45-year-old Kim Jong Nam, but did not reveal how they confirmed the man's identity, citing "security" reasons.

Three Malaysian embassy staff and six family members are stranded in North Korea as a result.

The attack was caught on surveillance video that shows two women going up to Kim and apparently smearing something on his face. He died 20 minutes later.

Two women - one Vietnamese and one Indonesian - have been arrested and charged with the murder.
