May to trigger Brexit on March 29

Families and businesses could be subject to national rules across 27 other member states the peers said

Britain's ambassador to the EU, Tim Barrow, informed European Council President Donald Tusk on Monday about the date when the United Kingdom intends to invoke Article 50 of the EU Treaty, the mechanism for starting the Brexit process. We have always said we meant to do so before the end of March.

It is expected that the 27 other European Union member nations will agree to the start date, with an initial response from them with 48 hours, the BBC reported.

Triggering Article 50 is required to start the process of leaving the European Union, although the negotiations could stretch out over years.

"I have set out my objectives", she said.

The article states that any interim agreement should include a schedule for a new free-trade area "within a reasonable length of time" - but it doesn't determine what is reasonable. "We will not be intimidated by threats, and I can assure you they simply will not work", Juncker warned.

"She has chosen the hardest and most divisive form of Brexit, choosing to take us out of the Single Market before she has even tried to negotiate".

"Everything is ready on this side", commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said.

Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay in the European Union in the Jun 23 referendum, while England and Wales voted to leave, resulting in a UK-wide vote of 52 per cent for Brexit.

Article 50 forbids any talk on the terms of departure until formal notification of withdrawal is given.

May has already announced that she will make a statement to the House of Commons shortly after invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

The prime minister heads into the European Union negotiations with her premiership, Britain's economy and even the United Kingdom's viability as a unified country all on the line.

Tusk will also summon those 27 leaders for a summit to endorse the final guidelines, probably in early May.

It is not quite accurate to say nothing much is going to happen after article 50 is triggered next week, but the huge excitement built up around "the date" is likely to prove misplaced.

It comes as Mrs May dismissed calls for a second independence referendum for Scotland before the Brexit deal is finalised.

It came as a new think tanks report reveals bills to manage Brexit will consume Parliament entirely from May onwards leaving "very little time for anything else".

EU leaders have said they want to conclude the talks within 18 months to allow the terms of the UK's exit to be ratified by the UK Parliament and the European Parliament, as well as approved by the necessary majority of EU states.
