'Rogue One' Almost Had a Happier Ending

The best bounty hunter in the galaxy

They love the expansive, complex, and seemingly infinite universe that George Lucas built 40 years ago.

"They're wonderful filmmakers. I'm very excited about what they do".

But what if it was all just one movie? He reveals while the initial vision for the film had been of the sacrificial ending fans saw in theaters, the writers weren't too sure Disney would let them get away with it. No, not the ending glimpsed in the previews.

Thankfully they went for the more depressing ending instead. The exclusive below video on Rogue One easter eggs discusses that and other cool Star Wars connections such as the droid that was a practical puppet designed by the folks who created BB-8, a turbo tank last seen in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and the first appearance of a TIE Reaper, a new twist on the iconic Imperial TIE Fighter. Let us know in the comments! "There were a lot of casualties on both sides, in both versions of the scripts", Whitta said. That what was written. "We decided they should die on the surface [of Scarif], and that was the way it ended". And we said "Yeah, of course".

"We always felt that it was the right thing to do, that these characters make the ultimate sacrifice".

Entertainment Weekly has many more details at the link, and it's definitely worth a read. "The original instinct was that they should all die", Whitta told EW.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story made the bold choice to kill off every single one of the main characters in the final battle to get the plans for the Death Star. "The ship-to-ship data transfer happened off Scarif". The two rebels would jettison in an escape pod - just like C-3PO and R2-D2 in the original Star Wars. "The pod looked like just another piece of debris ..."

While this is a cute echo of The Empire Strikes Back, where Han Solo hides the Millennium Falcon in a Star Destroyer's garbage to avoid detection, it's an underwhelming ending.

The most intriguing thing about this revelation is that Jyn and Cassian who would have been desperately trying to escape from Darth Vader in the film's climatic moment, instead of a group of rebel soldiers. So what happened here? "Eventually, through endless development you get through an evolutionary process where the best version rises to the top". Actually, maybe it's better they didn't go with the whole "hiding in garbage" trope again.
