Russian Federation summoned Israeli ambassador over airstrikes in Syria

S-200 missile being fired in a military drill

Russia's foreign ministry on Monday said it had summoned Israel's ambassador over the strikes and "expressed concern".

The embassy refrained from commenting on Koren's visit over the weekend, but the Russian Foreign Ministry did say that the ambassador's visit "was mostly to discuss the latest events in Syria and around it". "There will be no compromise on this issue", the defense minister stressed.

Russia, which backs Syria's embattled president, Bashar Assad, summoned its envoy, Gary Koren, on Friday less than 24 hours after the Israeli military action on Thursday night, according to The Times of Israel.

"The next time the Syrians use their air defense systems against our planes we will destroy them without the slightest hesitation", Liberman said.

An Israeli army statement said "several anti-aircraft missiles" were fired following the raid but that none hit their targets.

Israel used Iron Dome extensively to intercept rockets fired by Palestinian militants in the 2014 Gaza war, and the Arrow missiles were developed with an Iranian missile threat in mind.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed the Friday attacks, which started the latest flurry, targeted a weapons convoy intended for Hezbollah forces, who are in Syria fighting alongside the government against ISIS and other rebel forces.

Syria's army high command said Israeli jets attacked a target near Palmyra, in what it described as an act of aggression that aided Isis. Israel said it shot down one of the interceptors with its Arrow long-range SAMs.

Israel and Syria are still technically at war, though the border had remained largely quiet for decades until 2011 when the Syrian conflict broke out.

Moscow, Mar 21 Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said Russian Federation can play an important role in the crisis following Syria's firing missiles at israeli warplanes carrying out strikes in the conflict-torn country.
