Two care homes - Silversprings in Thorrington and Haven Lodge in Clacton - are inviting people to join them on Monday to strike a chord to mark the landmark birthday of the forces' sweetheart.

Although the planned Spitfire fly-past over the Dover cliffs wasn't possible, supporters of the Dame Vera Lynn's Children's Charity did fearless the wind for a birthday party atop the cliffs.

She said: "Activities like this improve the wellbeing of our patients and are a welcome distraction from the hospital routine".

Speaking to BBC Radio 2, she added: "While you can do that, I hope you will continue".

Dame Vera marked her birthday with a family tea party and said in a statement: "I am truly overwhelmed by the wonderful messages, gifts and gestures that people have made to mark this milestone occasion with me".

Three days before her birthday, she released "Vera Lynn 100", a new album which includes old favorites set to new orchestral accompaniments.

She also praised the students for a "very well sung" medley and was virtually presented with a vanilla sponge cake shaped into the number 100.

They also serenaded her with a selection of her best-loved hits including We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover.
