To end VIP culture, Punjab abolishes beacon lights

Cabinet meeting

In a bid to bring in change, the Punjab government led by Captain Amarinder Singh has made a decision to introduce a major change of rules in the system of governance in the state.

The decisions were taken in the first meeting of the state cabinet after the government came to power.

In another significant decision, the government chose to do away with the "VIP culture" by removing red, amber and blue beacons from official vehicles of all state ministers, MLAs, bureaucrats and political appointees, and scrap the practice of laying of foundation stones while inaugurating public projects.

The meeting, in which all the nine cabinet ministers were present, approved several key proposals which were part of election manifesto.

"All MLAs and MPs would declare their immoveable properties on January 1 every year, and for the year 2017-18 the same would be done by July 1 this year", said an official spokesperson.

It also formed a group of experts to assess the quantum of agriculture debt of farmers in the State. The committee would be asked to submit its report in 60 days, Badal said.

Adopting the Congress manifesto as its work programme, the CM also abolished the controversial system of Halqa-in-charges which was started by Akali Dal. When he was Finance Minister in the SAD-BJP government, at that time too he was the only minister not using the government vehicle to reach office.

It said employment bureaus will be set up in all districts and smart phones will be given to 2.4 lakh youth who had registered under Captain Smart Connect Scheme.

In an attempt to eliminate the drug menace, the new government chose to set up a Special Task Force (STF) in the Chief Minister's office, which would prepare and implement a comprehensive programme. Use of red beacons has been restricted by directives of the court as well. He said that he was from a common family and will serve the people as a common man. Channi was CLP leader before Capt Amarinder Singh was elected to head the government.
