Trump to host Egypt's President Sisi in Washington in early April

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al Sisi speaks during a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the El Thadiya presidential palace in Cairo

The PA's foreign ministry called the meeting between Sissi and Abbas "a bilateral response to all those who have tried to put into question the deep, strong and lasting historical relationship between the Egyptian Arab Republic and the state of Palestine, or to obfuscate the existing harmony between presidents Sissi and Abbas".

Egypt and the United States have been close allies for most of the almost 40 years since Cairo signed a peace treaty with Israel, with Egypt becoming the second largest recipient of U.S. aid after Israel, with some US$1.3 billion annually in military aid.

According to a report Sunday in the Egyptian al-Ahram daily, Sisi will make his first official visit to the White House during the first week of April.

The last meeting of Abbas and El-Sisi was on the margins of the African Summit held in Addis Ababa in January this year.

Yousef pointed out that President Abbas hailed the Egyptian efforts to reach a peaceful settlement to the Palestinian cause as well its political actions to provide protection to the Palestinian people.

The trip will be Sisi's first U.S. state visit since being elected president in 2014 as former U.S. President Barack Obama had never extended an invitation.

Even though the Trump administration has not clearly stated if it supports a two-state solution, both the Egyptian and PA presidents have remained consistent in backing it as the only solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Al-Sisi made the assertion at a meeting in Cairo with Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas, during which the two men discussed means of restarting stalled Palestine-Israel peace talks and promoting inter- Palestinian reconciliation. It is understood Mahmoud Abbas has reacted angrily to reports that Dahlan has held several meetings with supporters in Egypt.
