Australia Toughens Foreign Worker Visas, Says Australian Jobs for Australians

In a move to encourage local hiring, and to stop foreign workers from coming into their country, Australia has abolished 457 work visa. "We'll no longer allow 457 visas to be passports to jobs that could and should go to Australians".

Trade unions have warned the 457 temporary work visa program will simply be rebadged with a different name and fail to put Australian jobs first.

The new visa will also include a strengthened training obligation for employers sponsoring foreign skilled workers to provide enhanced training outcomes for Australians in high-need industries and occupations.

The new visas will require at least two years of previous work experience, better English language ability, stricter labor-market testing and a criminal background check.

"That rhetoric is very consistent with the rhetoric from Donald Trump around protecting American jobs and also from Theresa May's government in the United Kingdom post-Brexit, ensuring that U.K. workers get first access to jobs", she said, a reference to the British vote to exit the European Union.

Many of these South Africans hold 457 visas.

"The existing 457 visa programme is conducted for a period of four years, but essentially it is open-ended, and it results, in many cases, in a migration outcome", he said.

Just as we resigned ourselves to the reality that big Malc was determined to do absolutely nothing of substance as Prime Minister, he came out swinging today with the surprise scrapping of the 457 visa.

It will be replaced with a two to four-year Temporary Skill Shortage initiative and won't impact those now in Australia on the working visa.

But, IT sector was the biggest beneficiary of this visa, and out of 95,757 temporary workers right now in Australia, the majority of them are Indians, into IT and other niches.

Mr Baglay referred to fact that the India had agreed with the French government last year to allow Indian students holding postgraduate degree and above to extend their stay in France for two years.

Trainer David Hayes, who has employed and transitioned more 457 workers to Australian citizenship from his Euroa base was as direct.

The number of visas issued is uncapped, and reached a peak of 126,000 in 2012-13 under the Gillard-Rudd Labor government.

She said there would always be a place for the importation of labour, such as seasonal fruit pickers, but companies ought to be looking to employ Australians first, and then overseas second.
