Bill O'Reilly out at Fox News Channel

Back in January, Executive Chairman of 21st Century Fox and Executive Chairman of FOX News Rupert Murdoch said of Carlson: 'In less than two months, Tucker has taken cable news by storm with his spirited interviews and consistently strong performance.

It is tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims.

The New York Times reported on April 1 that about $13 million has been paid out to a total of five women who have accused O'Reilly of sexual harassment.

But Carlson earned his shot at Fox's prime-time lineup by doing well as a replacement for Greta Van Susteren during her 7pm slot on the network after she left her long-running program, On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, to take a job at MSNBC.

Others figure that O'Reilly's firing won't be a sticking point for most Fox viewers.

"After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O'Reilly have agreed that Bill O'Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel", the statement read. This all came at precisely the time when Tucker Carlson gained his 9 p.m. foothold by booking exactly those kinds of guests - straw men and women with whom he could debate and shout over to froth up "good TV". He was the top-rated host in cable news, serving up defiant commentary every weekday at 8 p.m., with a message that celebrated patriotism and expressed scorn for political correctness.

The departed O'Reilly's "The Factor" will continue through this week with Dana Perino hosting Wednesday and Thursday night, and Greg Gutfield on Friday.

It is unclear if the exit agreement between Fox and O'Reilly limits his ability to appear on other networks.

Perhaps the biggest factor in the downfall of O'Reilly was a report by The New York Times that uncovered how Fox had defended, protected, and doled out millions in settlements for several sexual harassment allegations brought against him.

O'Reilly was set to return to the show April 24, following an already-scheduled vacation. He was photographed in Rome shaking Pope Francis' hand on Wednesday. The network is not reliant on specific personalities, he argued. (Glenn Beck's The Blaze is a model for this - and it's the now former home of another right-wing rabble-rouser that might be positioned as the new generation O'Reilly: Tomi Lahren.) More likely, I think: O'Reilly goes to radio: either satellite radio or a syndicated show. Just yesterday, a seventh woman came forward to allege that she had been sexually harassed by O'Reilly while working at Fox News.

In a memo to Fox staff on Wednesday, the Murdochs said the decision followed an extensive review done in collaboration with an outside counsel.

But since reports of the alleged payoffs surfaced, dozens of advertisers, including BMW, have pulled out of the show.

Both O'Reilly and Ailes have vehemently denied the allegations against them.

Francis always swings by the VIP seats at the end of his audience for a quick round of handshakes. "I wish only the best for Fox News Channel".
