Browns have zeroed in on choice with No. 1 draft pick

John Fox watches the Chicago Bears from the endzone

One of the only criticisms of Garrett is that it appeared he took plays off during his three seasons in college. Chad Reuter projected Garrett as the second selection with Mitchell Trubisky taken first. Another draft possibility is quarterback Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina.

The Browns took Osweiler - and his $16 million guaranteed salary - from Houston in March as part of a trade that also provided a second-round pick in 2018.

With the 12th overall pick, the Browns are going to have to play it by year. Contrary to what some in the national media will lead you to believe, debate doesn't equal division and those conversations are something Brown not only encourages but believes in. The Patriots banking on teams being desperate enough to count on the little he showed last season, plus the hype over his development prospects, hasn't really paid off, but things happen on draft night that move players like Garoppolo, who doesn't want to be Brady's backup forever.

Browns general manager Sashi Brown and VP of player personnel Andrew Berry had a pre-draft press conference on Wednesday, and it offered several interesting nuggets. On Monday, Josh Norris of Rotoworld released a mock draft in which the Bills traded up to draft Trubisky at No. 5. However, the Browns have said they intend to give him a shot to compete for a starting spot.

It is also very possible that the Jets have their heart set on a certain player, and if that player is gone they want to know what their options are for a trade partner. The Bears could try to move down, but it's a bit more likely they keep the pick. But to parrot a phrase that has been uttered far too much in the past few months, if there is a player the Browns want at No. 6 they should "do whatever it takes" to get him.

According to Brown, the team has received calls inquiring about the No. 1 overall pick.

"Anything that we do, we're always going to do what we think is in the best interest of our football team, and that's how we approach it", he said.

"We don't want to make a habit of turning two picks into one, but we're positioned to do it, " Brown said.

"We feel really good about picking at one", he said, "and I'll leave it at that". And so, when we go through our processes, we actually force ourselves not to get to a point where we're just agreeing on everything.

"Even if we all agree on a particular player or decision, we constantly are pushing each other to think about what we're not thinking about", Brown said.

As the NFL Draft approaches us in just nine days, we have discovered a game-plan that will help you prepare for the day's festivities.
