Cascade Mall shooter dies in Skagit County Jail

The body of Arcan Cetin was found hanging just before 9 p.m. (12 a.m. ET), Skagit County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rosemary Kaholokula told NBC News Monday.

It was not immediately clear how Cetin died. Watch with us on TV or use this link for the KIRO 7 newscast livestream.

Emergency personnel gather at an entrance to the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Wash., after five people were killed there on September 23, 2016.

Arcan Cetin, 20, pictured here in a driver's license photo, killed himself in jail, authorities said.

Cetin had been charged with aggravated murder, which can bring the death penalty but had not entered pleas pending mental evaluations.

Cetin left the rifle with a 25-round magazine on a cosmetics counter before fleeing, police said in court documents.

This video image provided by Skagit County Department of Emergency Management shows a suspect wanted by the authorities regarding a shooting at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, Wash., Friday, Sept. 23, 2016.

Cetin was born in Turkey, but had lived in the USA since the age of six. Asked during interviews whether his Turkish relatives had ties to terrorist groups, Cetin said no.

Cetin was in the midst of mental health evaluations to determine whether he was fit to stand trial. Police later learned from Cetin's father that he drove a blue Chevrolet Cavalier.

He was inside the mall for about a minute during the shooting spree, investigators said.

The victims - Sarai Lara, Shayla Martin, Belinda Galde, Beatrice Dotson, and Wilton Eagan - ranged in ages from 16 to 95 years old. He encountered victim Chuck Eagan, then shot three other women, police said. Cetin moved his auto closer to an entrance at Macy's, retrieved a rifle from the trunk of the vehicle, and walked back into the department store.

"From our perspective, (Cetin) did not let justice take its course", Weyrich told the Skagit Valley Herald.
