Credit Card Breach Hits 1000 Hotels: See If You're Affected

Rather than affecting only 12 properties and their bars and restaurants, IHG said in a statement that the malware was "designed to access payment card data from cards used onsite at front desks" at properties between September 29, 2016, and December 29, 2016.

Photo Credit: InterContinental Hotels Group, parent of brands including Holiday Inn Express and Candlewood Suites, said some of its franchised properties in the USA and Puerto Rico suffered a recent credit card data breach.

Anyone who recently stayed at a hotel may want to check their accounts. The parent company of Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and other hotels is telling customers their credit card information may have been stolen.

Three New Hampshire hotels were affected by a security breach reported this week by InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG).

Buckinghamshire-based IHG had previously reported in February that a dozen United States hotels that it managed itself had been affected by the same attack. Instead, it has a ridiculous system to see what IHG franchise locations were affected as well as the respective time frames. As of December 31, 2016, The Americas pipeline totaled 945 hotels (102,451 rooms).

In a statement IHG said: "IHG hired a leading cyber security firm on behalf of franchisees to coordinate an examination of the payment card processing systems of franchise hotel locations in the Americas region". The malware was eradicated after investigations in February and March, the company said.

The culprits harvested the information that passed through payment terminals, which included 16-digit payment card numbers, expiration dates, and verification codes, and some customers' names.

Franchisees that used IHG's P2P encryption payment technology before September were not affected by the Malware, says the hotel group.

The group says there is no evidence to suggest that any other guest information was at risk.

To tackle the security problem, IHG is offering all its franchises a free security inspection carried out by an external forensics team, however they need to be proactive in taking up IHG's offer. Finally, Deutsche Bank AG increased their price target on InterContinental Hotels Group PLC from GBX 3,100 ($38.49) to GBX 3,500 ($43.46) and gave the company a "hold" rating in a research report on Wednesday, February 22nd. You should immediately report any unauthorized charges to your card issuer because payment card rules generally provide that cardholders are not responsible for unauthorized charges reported in a timely manner.
