Facebook CEO wants to augment your reality

Zuckerberg announced that today will see the beta launch of an open AR platform through a new camera function of the app that will allow developers to create their own filters and frames. Mark Zuckerberg kicked proceedings off by unveiling the company's ambitious plans for augmented reality. These effects won't just be limited to art frames and face filters, but also feature three-dimensional (3D) text and images.

"Facebook Spaces lets you easily phone a friend in the real world with Messenger video calling, so you can bring even more people into your VR space", says Facebook. But, note that Zuckerberg is now talking mostly about things you see in the app - not things you'd see with AR glasses, which he says may come eventually.

Looking to blend digital and physical worlds, Facebook is betting big on augmented reality.

He said the nature of work would also change: "In the future, I think that more of us are going to contribute to culture and society in ways that are not measured by economics or traditional GDP".

Zuckerberg instead devoted the bulk of his Californian keynote yesterday (18 April) to augmented reality (AR), which he described as Facebook's second act.

The Facebook chief executive connected the new technological platform with the social network's mission to build community. They passed around a virtual balloon and got excited about taking a virtual selfie. Others sniff that they might prove out as just another colossal flop to add to the hype rubbish pile along with the likes of 3DTV. Facebook's new virtual reality app will make it feel like you're in the same room as friends, or on the same beach, garden or park - the new VR app can transport your avatar anywhere.

If only Facebook could build an affordable AR device for consumers, there might be many takers.

Additionally Facebook will add chat extensions into Messenger. Overall it looks cute, but has a lot of work to be done before it has a definable goal. That raised questions about Facebook's ability to monitor gruesome material on its site.

Eventually people would use augmented reality on eyewear, Mr Zuckerberg said, although he stopped short of suggesting the company was planning to make games itself.

The technology giant's chief executive said "our hearts go out to the friends and family" of Godwin, who was shot dead by Steve Stephens in the U.S. city of Cleveland in Sunday in an apparent random killing.
