Facebook introduces VR Spaces, AR camera effects at F8

The company's chief executive Mark Zuckerberg used the company's F8 2017 event in San Jose, Calif., this week to highlight a mainstream AR platform that offers users a way to view and digitally manipulate the physical world around them through their smartphone cameras. F8 is Facebook's annual developer conference focusing on the future of technology.

Donning his signature grey T-shirt and jeans, Zuckerberg began his keynote by addressing the recent gruesome Cleveland murder that was broadcast on Facebook on Sunday. Overall it looks cute, but has a lot of work to be done before it has a definable objective.

Even though the Facebook CEO has not hinted anything about developing AR games, he did say that the popular networking platform is a great hub for businesses to reach people and experiment with AR. The highlighted features of the AR platform on Facebook include object recognition, 3D effects and exact location. In other words, no fancy headgear (ie: Oculus Rift) required (meanwhile, a strong vision for Oculus Rift itself remains, particularly in Facebook's Project Santa Cruz; a form of virtual reality headgear that looks like the standard Oculus Rift offering, but needn't be tethered to a smartphone or PC in order to deliver rich immersive experience).

Facebook also announced a full-fledged VR app dubbed Facebook Spaces where users on social media can connect in virtual reality space.

"Over time, I think this is going to be a really important technology that changes how we use our phones", Zuckerberg stated, reports ABC News.

Beside AR and Messenger, Facebook also launched "Places Graph" to provide free access to data on more than 140 million places around the world. We use cookies to improve your browsing experience. Evan Spiegel seems to believe he alone can anticipate what Snapchat users want, so he's spent the last 5 years curating limited selections of geofilters, Our Stories, Discover channels, and augmented reality selfie filters.

Augmented reality involves the overlay of computer-generated images into real-world surroundings. Facebook on the other hand opened up camera effects to developers, giving them the ability to build their own photo frames, face masks and more.

Facebook also announced a new program called Developer Circles, aimed at forging a strong developer community to enable better dissemination of knowledge about technologies as well as better collaboration.

Facebook's annual developers' event, held this year in San Jose, is the social network's chance to bring together all of the people that work with the site to create the apps and other features used by the nearly two billion people.

Or, actually engage with the real world by going out like a normal person. By creating such experiences, it will "help people learn more about where they are so they can make informed decisions about where to go and what to do", adds Facebook. In essence, Facebook, Snapchat, and Apple are training us today for more sophisticated augmented reality down the road. The social network founder is taking advantage of allegations claiming Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said his app was "only for rich people", and that he didn't want to expand into "poor countries like India and Spain".
