Flint's mayor to recommend water source after lead crisi

The City of Flint announced Tuesday it will keep the Great Lakes Water Authority as its drinking water source under a new 30-year contract.

Last year, Weaver said the city of 100,000 residents would stick with a plan to draw from a pipeline to Lake Huron that is under construction.

Karen Weaver's announcement Tuesday to stay with the Great Lakes Water Authority is a reversal. Those following today's announcement will likely find tomorrow's Metro Times cover story of interest: ACLU reporter and MT alum Curt Guyette looks into the controversial pipeline's history, from the perspective of its opponents and its champions.

The mayor, state and federal officials have said the option is the least expensive alternative for the city for the next 20 years, and safest for the water system and customers.

The water problems in the city started in April 2014 when the city's water source was switched from the city of Detroit to the Flint River as a cost-cutting measure. But the river water was not treated to reduce corrosion.

The KWA will become a backup source of water for the GLWA, creating needed redundancy in the system that supplies water to 3.9 million customers in 127 communities in Southeast Michigan.

Officials hope the city council approves the proposed deal by June.

Because of the requirements of the Drinking Water Revolving Fund, the city is required to open the discussion about future water source to residents, starting with the town hall meeting.

Bob Kaplan, acting regional director for the Environmental Protection Agency in Chicago, said the agreement is the "best long-term solution".

Weaver said she doesn't want the city to be switching water sources again. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
