Gunman kills 3 in Fresno; suspect wanted in other case

Authorities on the scene after a series of fatal shootings in Downtown Fresno

Three people were killed and two other people were injured in a series of shootings Tuesday at several locations in downtown Fresno, police said.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says 39-year-old Kori Ali Muhammad was armed with a revolver and reloaded at one point.

The suspect who police say took three lives in downtown Fresno, Calif., had meant to go on a lethal rampage once he found out that he was being sought for an earlier homicide, police say.

'This is exclusively based on race'.

"It's still too early to tell, but on first impression, this case has all the elements for prosecutors to seek a death sentence", Torres said.

A resident in the neighborhood encountered the shooter.

Dyer says Muhammad fired at Williams, intending to kill him, because he felt Williams disrespected him.

They scattered, and Muhammad picked the one who appeared heavier, David Jackson. He shouted "allahu akbar" as he was taken into custody.

Fresno police chief Jerry Dyer said: 'These individuals who were chosen today did not do anything to deserve what they got.

Stephen Hughes, 66, said he and his wife rushed home Tuesday after receiving a frantic call from a neighbor. He also yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) when he was arrested, officials said.

Muhammad has a criminal history that includes arrests on weapons, drugs and false imprisonment charges and making terrorist threats, police say.

Dyer said Muhammad may have been spurred to the killing spree by seeing a bulletin online seeking his arrest in the motel slaying. 'I would hope that whatever Kori tells police, they take him seriously and they start following up'. The FBI and ATF San Francisco Field Division are assisting Fresno police with the investigation.

The suspect, 39-year-old Kori Muhammad is in Fresno Police custody Wednesday morning after a shooting rampage in Central Fresno.

Kori Ali Muhammad, a gunman who nicknamed himself "Black Jesus" shot and killed three strangers in a bid to kill as many white people as possible, police said. The Arabic phrase also came up later, as the AP detailed his troubling social media posts.

He told investigators that he hid out in a ravine and practiced voodoo rituals after the Motel 6 slayings. "He said he didn't like white men and white men were responsible for keeping black men down".

Speaking during a Press Conference, Dyer said he did not believe the murders were related to terrorism, adding that the shootings were "solely based on race". Muhammad had gone there to meet a woman, and he argued with security who asked him to leave.

Muhammad reportedly fired 16 rounds in under two minutes. He continued saying that this shooting was "unprovoked". The 25-year-old was shot and killed while responding to an incident at the motel Muhammad was visiting.

Following the shooting, Fresno city spokesman Mark Standriff said county offices were placed on lockdown, and people were urged to shelter in place. The guard was taken to the hospital who later died due to sustaining grave injuries.

Muhammad, who was previously known as Cory McDonald, faces four counts of murder and at least two additional charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

"He was just shooting, shooting, shooting", Praise said.

The nonprofit organization doesn't believe Muhammad was tied to Catholic Charities, spokeswoman Teresa Dominguez said.
