In death, Hernandez's murder conviction likely to be tossed

Tom Brady

The child molestation conviction of former Roman Catholic priest John Geoghan, a key figure in the clergy sex abuse scandal that rocked the Boston archdiocese, was vacated after he was beaten to death in 2003 in his cell at the same MA maximum-security prison.

The legal "technicality", as Elikann puts it, is called the Abatement Doctrine and allows prisoners to quite literally die to get away with murder - if a convicted murderer suffers an untimely death or commits suicide as in Hernandez' case prior to exhausting their appeals, the conviction is automatically vacated, Elikann said.

"Aaron was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence", said Baez.

BOSTON Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez hanged himself in the prison cell where he was serving a life sentence for murder, officials said today, the same day his ex-teammates on the New England Patriots were set to visit the White House to mark their Super Bowl victory.

Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez was found dead inside his prison cell in an apparent suicide on April 19, according to the MA state Department of Corrections. He was subsequently transported to UMASS Leominster where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. ET by a physician at the hospital.

"Mr Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items", he added.

The death of the former New England Patriots tight end Wednesday will nearly certainly lead to the expungement of his 2015 first-degree murder conviction for the slaying of Odin Lloyd since the case was still under appeal in MA.

Hernandez grew up in CT and played for the Patriots from 2010 to 2012.

The former Patriots tight end had been charged in 2014 with the 2012 deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, who were killed in a drive-by shooting at a night club in Boston.

US Defense Secretary Mattis addresses confusion over carrier
Officials said there had been a lack of follow-up with commanders overseeing the aircraft carrier's movements. The North also tried but failed to launch what US officials said was a medium-range missile on Sunday.

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early, Jr., says detectives assigned to his office and the Department of Correction are investigating Hernandez's death.

Prison officials said Hernandez was in a single cell in the general population and wasn't on suicide watch, and in the wake of his death, one lawmaker said there needs to be changes made to the current system.

The Patriots had no immediate comment.

Investigators suggested Hernandez shot Lloyd to keep him quiet about the two earlier killings.

MA state police has launched an investigation into the circumstances around Hernandez's death.

"Knowing what I know about Aaron, and knowing Aaron, there's a good chance that perhaps we can get that reversed", said Baez.

To compound the mystery surrounding his death, Hernandez reportedly told no one close to him that he was considering taking his life and left no suicide note.

He was duly acquitted in a separate murder case last week.
