Las Vegas to get needle vending machines

Nevada rolls out needle vending machines

In Nevada, vending machines also will be used to dispense free, clean needles to drug addicts.

The program's primary goal is to reduce the transmission of communicable diseases such as hepatitis C and HIV, both risks for those who use dirty needles for intravenous drug use.

"We will conduct evaluations in the future to determine the success of both our storefront and vending machine models in reducing HIV and hepatits C infections among [people who inject drugs]", officials stated.

Interested users must register with centers.

"This is a harm reduction approach", said Trac-B Exchange Program Manager Chelsi Cheatom, while speaking with Las Vegas NBC affiliate SLV3.

Reich said putting one of the vending machines inside the Community Counseling Center of Southern Nevada was created to allow some drug abusers to interact with trained counselors if they decided they wanted to get help. Apart from the syringes, each gift-wrapped kit also contains alcohol wipes, safe sex supplies and a disposal box, Valley News Live reported. The new initiative taken by the inventors of syringe vending machines will motivate people to use clean needles to protect themselves from becoming the victim of fatal diseases.

The vending machines filled with clean needles will be available to designated individuals by the end of May. Use of heroin among people between 18 and 25 years old likewise increased more than two times over the past decade. In the wake of the rising concerns associated with heroin crisis, the congress made a decision to lift the ban in January 2016. The move was made partially in response to the highly publicized 2015 HIV crisis that hit a tiny county in rural in - where almost 200 people were diagnosed with HIV in relation to a "close network" of drug users sharing hard-to-find needles.

According to the Harm Reduction Coalition, needle exchange programs lower health care costs. "The issue now is more, what method is appropriate for my community?"

The annual death toll of people who lost their lives to drug overdose has been rising at alarming rates. This rate was even higher in the rural areas of the country. "It becomes harder as a society to respond to them with kindness".
