North Korea displays new missiles in military parade

The attempted missile launch comes a day after the North held a military parade in its capital marking the birth anniversary of the state founder where what appeared to be new ballistic missiles were displayed.

South Korea said the combined show of force "threatened the whole world". US Vice-President Mike Pence travels to South Korea on Sunday as part of a long-planned Asian tour.

Pyongyang also warned Washington on Saturday to end its "military hysteria" or face retaliation as a USA aircraft carrier strike group headed towards the region.

Recently North Korea condemned the USA strike on a Syrian airfield as "an unforgivable act of aggression" and justified its nuclear weapons developments as "the right choice a million times over" because of it.

Tension between North Korea and the United States rose to new levels on Saturday after the Pyongyang regime unveiled what could be a missile capable of striking the American mainland.

"China is ready to coordinate closely with Russia to help cool down as quickly as possible the situation on the peninsula and encourage the parties concerned to resume dialogue", Wang told Lavrov, referring to the stalled six-party talks on the North's nuclear program that includes Russia, China and the United States.

No nuclear test or ballistic missile launch was conducted during the celebration of the 105th birthday of Kim Il Sung, the country's former supreme leader who died in 1994.

Choe Ryong-hae, one of the most senior military officials in North Korea, was reported to have warned: "We're prepared to respond to an all-out war with an all-out war".

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff did not provide details of the launch, and it was not immediately clear what type of missile was sacked.

A USA aircraft carrier group is headed to the region. The official added that if the US shows any sign of "reckless" military aggression, Pyongyang is ready to launch a pre-emptive strike of its own. Pence likely wouldn't make the trip if any belligerent actions were pending.

Pence had been briefed on the failed launch en route to Seoul and had been in touch with Trump, White House aides said.

North Korea has reportedly launched a missile on its east coast which has failed.

North Korea's leadership has warned the United States it is "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks" if provoked.

In a call to his Moscow counterpart Sergei Lavrov, Mr Wang said: "China is ready to coordinate closely with Russian Federation to help cool down as quickly as possible the situation on the peninsula and encourage the parties concerned to resume dialogue".

China has been begging both North Korea and the U.S.to calm the hell down as tensions between the two nations have risen in past few weeks.

Kim Dong-yub, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, said the canisters and trucks suggested that the North was developing technology to "cold launch" ICBMs, ejecting them from the canisters before they ignite.

This year, however, the holiday also showcased what appeared to be long-range and submarine-based missiles: weapons the country has always been warned against possessing.

The procession marked the 105th anniversary of the birth of the country's founding father, Kim Il-sung - the grandfather of present leader Kim Jong-un. Trump said on Twitter.

A carrier task force is now in the area after being diverted from Southeast Asia and President Donald Trump has been quoted numerous times promising action if North Korea misbehaves.

Beijing banned imports of North Korean coal on February 26, cutting off Pyongyang's most important export.
