North Korea Launches Missile, Military Officials Believe It Has Failed

North Korea did some posturing of its own on Saturday, rolling out intercontinental ballistic missiles and other military hardware at a parade to celebrate the birthday of the country's late founder Kim Il Sung.

A North Korean missile "blew up nearly immediately" on its test launch on Sunday, the U.S. Pacific Command said, hours before U.S. Vice President Mike Pence was due in the South for talks on the North's increasingly defiant arms programme.

Trump has repeatedly said he will prevent Pyongyang from its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland United States.

Displaying more than one of the missiles indicates North Korea is progressing with its plan to base a missile on a submarine, which are hard to detect, said Joshua Pollack, editor of the Washington-based Nonproliferation Review.

North Korea has warned the United States that it is "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks", as it displayed its war arsenal.

President Donald Trump's tweets are adding fuel to a "vicious cycle" of tensions on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea's vice foreign minister told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview Friday.

"Trump is always making provocations with his aggressive words ..."

There is much hand-wringing over the potential of North Korean nuclear missiles ["U.S. sends Navy strike group toward the Korean Peninsula", news, April 10].

"We never beg for peace but we will take the toughest counteraction against the provocateurs in order to defend ourselves by powerful force of arms and keep to the road chosen by ourselves", read a statement quoted by Merrit.

U.S. Pacific Command said the ballistic missile, of a kind not yet determined, was launched from near a submarine base at Sinpo, a port city on North Korea's east coast.

State television showed Kim, wearing a black suit and white shirt, clapping in delight along with senior government officials to acknowledge the thousands of soldiers and civilians taking part in the parade at Kim Il Sung Square in the capital, Pyongyang.

The parade, an elaborate display of the state's vast power, involves tens of thousands of participants, from goose-stepping soldiers to crowds of civilians who have spent weeks perfecting their ability to wave plastic flowers in unison.

For outside military analysts, though, the highlight is the weaponry that the North puts on display.

The state TV also showed several KN-08 missiles being rolled out on trucks at the parade.

The Yonhap news agency in South Korea first reported the failed launch, citing the South Korean military.

"However, North Korea has a habit of showing off new concepts in parades before they ever test or launch them", Hanham said.

Pyongyang recently launched a long-range ballistic missile and claims it is close to perfecting an intercontinental ballistic missile and nuclear warhead that could attack the United States mainland.
