Patriots player crashes White House press briefing

President Donald Trump is presented with a New England Patriots football helmet and jersey by Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft during a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, April 19, 2017. Well, half of the Patriots did, anyway. Should the Patriots decline to match, the defending Super Bowl champion would receive a first-round pick compensation from Malcolm Butler's new team.

Super Bowl champion players often miss the annual White House victory visit due to scheduling conflicts. To some players, absences were notably linked to politics. The earlier photo shows about 120 people, including players and staff, standing behind former President Barack Obama. In a Twitter post Wednesday that she subsequently deleted, Bündchen shared a link to an anti-Trump rally later this month.

Later Wednesday night, the Patriots tweeted side-by-side photos of 2004 and 2017, both years in which the Super Bowl visit was the second in three years.

It's not uncommon for just a few representatives from Super Bowl championship teams to make the ceremonial trip to the White House.

After the triumphant victory, tight end Martellus Bennett quickly made it clear he was not coming to the White House and other teammates followed. Gronkowski asked, prompting laughter from the journalists. But on Wednesday morning, Brady issued a statement saying that "in light of some recent developments", he was "unable to attend" the ceremony, as he was "attending to some personal family matters".

The president isn't mentioning quarterback Tom Brady. Tom has previously called Trump a "good friend," but was recently publicly scrutinized for showing support for the 70-year-old in the 2016 election.

"Where's Danny? Where's Danny?"

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Thank you very much.

Several players this year alluded to U.S. politics as motivation for not attending: "I just don't feel welcome in that house", running back LeGarrette Blount reportedly told the Rich Eisen radio show.

He is reportedly spending the day with his mother, who has been battling cancer for the past year.

"I've had the great privileged to be here several times, but this one, th way we were treated the opportunity to be in the Oval Office and be with the President, and see the inside of the White House, has just been fabulous", Belichick said of Wednesday's visit.

Kraft said he was delighted to be honored by Trump for a remarkable comeback victory that he said echoed the president's own longshot campaign "against 16 career politicians facing odds nearly as long as we faced in the fourth quarter".

According to The Boston Globe, 34 Patriots players were at the White House to visit with Trump. "This is the first time it's gotten any media attention". What are you going to do next? He later added: "This is America, we're all free to do whatever's best for us".
