Petrol bunks to be shut on Sundays from May 14

All summed up, the dealers from seven states - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Haryana - and one union territory, Puducherry, have agreed to shut their fuel pumps starting from May 14th. Some dealers associations have announced that their push to shut bunks on Sunday was in line with the government's advice to use less fuel.

He also added that, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged people to follow traffic rules and also save petrol and diesel".

The Association leader Suresh Kumar said that the consortium of Indian petroleum dealers chose to shut their shops every Sunday in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Haryana for 24 hours. "On an average, the per day sales of fuel is for around Rs 153 crore". A total of around 20,000 fuel pump outlets in the said eight states will be shut down for twenty-four hours on Sundays, post May 14. "All these days we have been functioning paying workers double wages". However, there will be one employee on Sundays to supply fuel in case of emergencies. A meeting of all India petroleum dealers association will be held on May 6 in which all this matter will be discussed and suitable decision taken, Vishwas said reiterating that no decision will be taken that will harm or inconvenience the general public.

"@PetroleumMin neither endorses nor approves of move by a small section of dealers to keep their petrol pumps closed on Sundays", the ministry said in a series of tweets.

"We are operating on extremely low margins, selling high-tech unleaded petrol-diesel products in which the evaporation rate is very high, resulting in huge losses", Lodh told IANS. The idea is to ask people not to take their vehicles out on Sundays.

Nareddi said trucks, other four wheelers and bikes have sufficient fuel tank capacity to store fuel for a travel of 300 to 500 km. It represents 80 per cent of the 53,224 petrol pumps of public sector oil firms.

The CIPD, which represents almost 55,000 petroleum dealers across India, met last week in Kurukshetra.

Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also said, "Major dealer's federations have clarified that they don't endorse any closure of petrol pumps on any day". The association's president Ajay Bansal said not participating in the closure.
