President Rouhani Reiterates Iran's Non-Stop Military Growth

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday he does not view recent USA missile strikes on ally Syria as a message for Iran, which he called a "powerful country" that the US can not harm. "It would be very unsafe to pin former President Ahmadinejad as being just a principlist... because there's a lot of the things that he has done within Iran in terms of internal policies that could qualify as being reformist".

Analysts described Mr Raisi as utterly loyal to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, meaning he would likely remain deeply suspicious of engagement with the West, but unlikely to backtrack on the nuclear deal - which had the boss' tacit consent.

When asked about the Supreme Leader's injunction, Ahmadinejad noted: "This was only an advice, not an order".

Many Iranians have grown impatient with the slow rate of improvement in their economic fortunes since worldwide financial and trade sanctions were lifted after Iran curbed its disputed nuclear activity under its deal with six world powers.

Among them, three main political figures, namely incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, principlist cleric Ebrahim Raisi, and former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, drew attentions and were at the focus of every camera. But Ahmadinejad says he's not fazed by Trump or the United States in general, and asserts America's foreign policy decisions in other countries will not intimidate the people of Iran.

During the registration in Iran's Interior Ministry, Ahmadinejad, expressed hope for victory. He said he would run as an "independent" and described himself as a "soldier" of Iran.

The 1988 massacre gained new prominence in Iranian public discourse a year ago when Ahmad Montazeri, the son of the only prominent regime official who opposed the killings, released an audio recording of his father's conversations with the leading players in the mass execution.

Rouhani however set conditions of peace; "the road to peace is not a one-way route and all countries should have a will to keep peace and security in the region", he said, turning to the matter at hand, Iran's improved defense capabilities.

One big question is why Raisi would risk a run for the presidency if he has ambitions to become supreme leader as many speculate.

This sidelining of human rights issues may have helped to insulate Rouhani from the threat of disqualification. But in an open election I think people would vote for Rouhani.

"The nuclear deal is a legal document and a pact".

Toward that end, Agence France-Presse reported on Friday that the administration had announced that 20 billion dollars' worth of development projects would be going into effect in the coming week.
