Real Transformation in American Politics Is What's Happening to the Democratic Party

Hillary Clinton had promised to help rebuild the Democratic Party's infrastructure

"Our job is to radically transform the Democratic Party into a fifty-state party and a party which does not continue to ignore half of the states in our country, including some of the poorest states in America", he continued.

Their visit comes as Democrats are trying to rebound from a series of election losses in Kentucky. He said the party's strategy should include building a strong base in all 50 states, not just on both coasts.

Sanders echoed promises he made during his presidential campaign previous year - proposals to raise the minimum wage, make public colleges tuition-free, close the pay-gap between men and women and raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations. But even though he's pretty progressive, the chairman of the DNC, Tom Perez, was booed by the audience at one of these unity rallies.

Sanders also did well in rural areas that supported Republican candidate Ted Cruz, a US senator from Texas, in the primary and Trump in the November election. A Perriello victory in the June 13 primary - and November's general election - would be a major boost for the Sanders wing and a setback for outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe, one of the leaders of the party establishment that backed Clinton past year. During an interview with ABC News before the rally Tuesday night, he proudly said he was "the longest-serving independent senator in US history".

As supporters yelled "We love you" or "Feel the Bern", Sanders said healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and said he wants to expand Social Security benefits for senior citizens and disabled veterans who are financially struggling.

Kentucky is Republican turf, politically speaking.

Earlier in the day, Sanders met with six Kentuckians at a Frankfort coffee shop.

Grimes, the Democratic secretary of state, was challenging Republican U.S. Sen.

Though Sanders sought the Democratic presidential nomination, and he is often aligned with Democrats in the Senate, he's actually an independent senator from Vermont.

Back in 1985, Sanders said "I am not now, nor have I ever been, a liberal Democrat".

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Sanders laid out a plan to make public colleges tuition-free across the country, and he's continued to push for similar measures in Congress since the election.

Most Kentucky Democrats have tried to distance themselves from the Affordable Care Act, mostly because of its association with former President Barack Obama.

"Kentuckians have roundly rejected the ultra-liberal, anti-jobs platform of coastal elites like Sanders and Perez", Watson said in a statement.
