Republicans survive election scare, narrowly win Kansas seat

Republican state Treasurer Ron Estes, 60, will represent the Kansas 4th congressional district replacing Mike Pompeo, who Trump named as Central Intelligence Agency director.

With 94% of the precincts counted, Estes led Thompson by 52% to 46%.

National Democrats had mostly stayed out of the race that had until recently promised to be a Republican landslide. Rockhold received 2 percent of the total vote.

That said, the results in Kansas serve as a reminder to the political world that, as things stand, the GOP is facing serious headwinds - and they have no idea how to improve their standing.

However, such a portrayal leaves out a crucial detail: The Kansas-04 election was influenced primarily by the extreme unpopularity of Kansas governor Sam Brownback, a Republican who has been in office since 2011.

It came just a few months into the Trump administration and observers were watching the race to see if there was a political reaction, Schmidt said. "Obviously, there's still some discussion about Obamacare and repealing and replacing that". The Republican Congressional Campaign Committee dumped $130,000 into the race. The Belle Plaine couple voted for Estes. Thompson's campaign requested the television station pull the ad it asserts is "outright false". He said people who believe Estes will vote in lockstep with the GOP on all issues will find that he is "a very independent-minded individual". Bernie Sanders' campaign for the presidency a year ago and made a decision to run for the 4th District. In a groundswell of grassroots support the week before the election, Thompson's campaign raised $240,000 from 20,000 individual donations from across the country.

Estes won by roughly 10,000 votes over Democrat James Thompson, a civil rights attorney.

In the final 24 hours of the race, the Democrat attended a Seder with Jewish voters, recorded a "thank you" video for volunteers, shook hands at a breakfast for Learjet retirees, and (through a translator) sat for an interview with Wichita's Spanish-language radio station.

After Tuesday night's 4th District win for Republican Ron Estes, some are taking a closer look at the numbers.

Estes won his spot by less than 7 percent. Said Mr. Estes: "The pundits were talking about... this wasn't a seat we were going to win, that we were going to lose a Republican seat... that it was a chance for the Democrats".

"I wanted to run in 2018 one way or the other", he said. "Seeing everybody here, and I know where we need to go to fix what we weren't able to do in 60 days". With a fractured, 11-candidate Republican field, Democrats hope Ossoff can cross the 50% threshold and avoid a June one-on-one runoff with the leading GOP candidate. "Trump won this district by nearly 30 points, and Pompeo never won less than 60 percent of the vote".

We did not win the seat in Kansas District 4, but make no mistake-this enormous swing is a major victory for the resistance.

President Trump, who carried the 4th district with about 57 percent of the general election vote in 2016, also pushed for Estes, with a message on social media network Twitter expressing support for his fellow Republican earlier in the day.

"Republicans nationally should be very anxious", Bob Beatty, a Washburn University political scientist, told the AP.

Still, Speaker Ryan expressed his congratulations to Estes on his victory.

Allen said Thompson's strong showing could help recruit Democratic candidates in future races.

Readers of a liberal blog have donated more than $200,000 in less than a week to the Democratic candidate in a special congressional election in Kansas.
