Russian Federation warns of serious consequences from United States strike in Syria

US threatens further strikes in Syria

The Senate's No. 2 Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, says Trump's move sends a strong message to rogue nations, and agrees that the US needs a broader strategy.

I have said it before and I'll say it again: regime change has NEVER worked; historically it has been tried over and over and over again, and every time it has been tried it failed.

Iran has provided crucial military and economic assistance to Assad throughout Syria's six-year civil war.

The governor of Homs, a city roughly 160 kilometers north of the capital Damascus, said at least five people were killed and seven were wounded in the U.S. strikes, Reuters reported.

Russia's defence ministry responded to the attack by calling in the United States military attache in Moscow to say that at midnight Moscow time (5pm EDT) it would close down a communications line used to avoid accidental clashes between Russian and U.S. forces in Syria, Interfax new agency said.

Later this week US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will travel to Moscow, while Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson will garner support at a G7 summit of foreign ministers.

Thursday night's strikes - some 60 cruise missiles fired from two ships in the Mediterranean - were the culmination of a rapid, three-day transformation for Trump, who has long opposed deeper USA involvement in Syria's civil war.

The US president, Donald Trump, has signaled a dramatic about-turn toward Assad, who many in the worldwide community hold responsible for Tuesday's horrific events.

"You pick and choose your battles and when we're looking at this, it's about changing up priorities and our priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out", Haley told reporters on 30 March, just days before dozens of Syrian civilians deceased from chemical weapons injuries.

He also said that the US missile airstrikes were an effort to dispirit the Syrian people and Army and to embolden the terrorists. "The United States will not stand by when chemical weapons are used".

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), both of whom are the current leading cheerleaders in their parties for a non-interventionist foreign policy, condemned the attacks and they were both right to do so; not only is it illegal to initiate military action without the approval of congress, it is also illegal for Trump to take us to war without a declaration.

Sir Michael went on that there must now be a longer-term solution to the conflict that does not involve Mr Assad, adding: "Someone who uses barrel bombs and chemicals to kill his own people simply can not be the future leader of Syria".

The strikes also prompted a backlash from Russian Federation. The statement was made in the name of a previously unheard of "shared operations room" between Russia, Iran and allied forces.

A Syrian military source said its armed forces had also received advance warning.

Syria's ally Russian Federation says the deaths were caused when a Syrian air strike hit a depot where rebels were making chemical weapons, leading to a leak of toxic gas.

In the blighted town itself, residents mourning their dead welcomed the U.S. strike as a way to pressure Damascus.

Mr Tillerson's comments came just days after the United States fired dozens of cruise missiles at the Syrian airbase that was allegedly used in the chemical attack, escalating the US' role in Syria and drawing criticism from Mr Assad's allies including Russian Federation and Iran.
