Small plane crashes next to Lisbon-area supermarket; 5 dead

A pilot and three passengers died after their plane crashed into a Lidl supermarket carpark in Tires Portugal

According to media in the country, the five dead include the pilot and three passengers as well as the driver of a lorry which was hit by the plane.

A spokesman for the local emergency services, Andre Fernandes, said the plane was headed for Marseilles in France.

The plane crash landed on a lorry which was unloading goods in the supermarket vehicle park.

About 90 firefighters mobilised to fight a blaze, which was quickly put out.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.

The plane - believed to be registered in Switzerland - had just taken off from an aerodrome in Tires.

The injured were shopping inside the supermarket, which is located in a residential neighbourhood, and were treated for shock and smoke inhalation.

Authorities declined to identify those killed in the plane until their identities could be compared with the flight plan.

The spot where the plane crashed is said to be just 150 metres from a local school. Nearby houses were blackened by smoke, with nine people forced to move out of their homes.

Portugal's president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was quick to arrive on the scene after the first reports emerged.
