Super Bowl champion Patriots to visit White House Wednesday

Tom Brady

"It was a complete team effort".

Trump commented on the team's wonderful comeback in the Super Bowl, stunning the world for pushing the game into overtime and winning the game despite a 25-point deficit in the second half.

"Good old pundits, boy, they're wrong a lot, aren't they?"

But Brady's absence remains the most interesting story here, even if this isn't the first time he's skipped one of these events. Shortly before the event, Brady posted a photo of his parents on Instagram, wishing them a happy anniversary.

On a more somber note, there was no mention of former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, a convicted murder who committed suicide and was found hanging in his jail cell Wednesday morning.

Hernandez played three seasons for the team before he was arrested and charged with murder in the 2013 shooting of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee's sister.

At the White House daily briefing, reporter George Condon asked Press Secretary Sean Spicer to name a single legislative accomplishment from Trump's agenda that he could boast when the 100-day mark hits.

Five other Patriots players have said they will skip the trip for political reasons: Devin McCourty, LeGarrette Blount, Alan Branch, Chris Long and Martellus Bennett. Hightower wasn't at the White House.

"Immediately to me that means he's going to tone it down because what he said was so nice".

During the White House ceremony, Trump praised individual players and their overall performance at the Super Bowl, saying that "everybody played a role and everybody played as champions". Since Tom Brady wasn't there to supervise Gronk, the Big Gronkowski chose to wander off on his own and crash Sean Spicer's White House press briefing. Spicer smiled as he looked over his right shoulder and said, "I think I got this, but thank you".

The President, who identifies as a friend and fan of Brady's, also has ties to Patriots owner Bob Kraft and head coach Bill Belichick.

Kraft said it was the team's "distinct honor" to celebrate the victory "with a very good friend".

"Whether you're trying to rebuild our country or win a Super Bowl, there are no days off", the president said during a ceremony on the South Lawn.

While several high-profile members of the team, including quarterback Tom Brady, were not in attendance, the day was still worth watching. Others include the owners of the Houston Texans, the Washington Redskins, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Los Angeles Rams.
