Suspect in slaying freed after posting eye-popping $35M bail

Tiffany Li

A Californian woman accused of murdering the father of her two children is expected to be released from jail after she managed to raise $35m (£28m) bail money.

Tiffany Li, 31, is charged with murder and accused of conspiring with her boyfriend to kill her ex-boyfriend, Keith Green, KPIX reports. She is expected to post one of the largest bails in U.S. history Thursday. Under California law, the equity in the property bond has to be worth double that amount, so it consisted of $62 million in real estate, comprised of 18 to 20 properties, Wagstaffe said.

The San Mateo District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe believes Li is a flight risk, but if she was to leave for China, the $65 million in cash and assets can be confiscated by the county.

Tiffany Li rushed out of the jail Thursday at about 1:45 p.m. with a bodyguard, wearing a baseball hat and a hood pulled tight around her head. These requirements are layered on other conditions set by the judge, including electronic monitoring, house arrest, relinquishing her passport and staying at least 100 yards away from any airport, Wagstaffe said. The precautions to prevent her escape back to perhaps, China, where her family is are going to be at the very heart of Thursday's hearing.

Li has been in custody since SWAT officers arrested her in May, 2016 in her Hillsborough mansion, where a fleet of luxury cars often sat in the driveway, including a Rolls-Royce, Land Rover, Mercedes and Ferrari. Soon after, she allegedly killed Green and his body was found May 11.

Fearing that she would lose custody of her two daughters.

"I was surprised at the number of people that came forward", Geoff Carr said, "I think people believe she is not guilty", he told the newspaper.

Li was arrested at her Hillsborough mansion, one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in the USA, after the body of her ex-boyfriend, Keith Green, was located in some woods 128 kilometres north of her home.

Green was reported missing the following day, when he did not return home, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said. She is also planning to pay some of her bail with cash. Critics of the system argue that cash bail schemes like the one found in California state court unfairly disadvantage poor suspects who can't afford to post bail while allowing wealthy defendants like Li to go free pending trial.
