UK MPs back plans for 8 June poll

British lawmakers voted by a resounding 522 to 13 on Wednesday to back Prime Minister Theresa May's call for a snap election on June 8. The June 8 election date places the UK's national election between that of France (April/May) and Germany (September), meaning parliamentary chambers on both sides of the channel may be in for a shake up. However, the attacks on her decision continued hours later tin the Commons.

May also wants an election now so she doesn't have to be preparing for one in 2019, when the Brexit negotiations will be reaching their climax.

Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips, reporting from Westminster in London, said there was a lot of stake for the Labour party in the election. This election would allow May to be voted in as the prime minister.

"We welcome the general election but this is a prime minister who promised there wouldn't be one, a prime minister who can not be trusted", he told the Commons on Wednesday.

"Crush the Saboteurs" was the headline on the front page of the Daily Mail, the second-highest selling newspaper.

May said she had already set out her plans for Britain's departure from the European Union in a document published earlier in the year. "Now we will be much freer", she told The Sun.

Like the Lib Dems' Farron, first minister of the Scottish government and Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon clearly positioned herself against May, describing the Prime Minister's move as a "huge political miscalculation".

She claimed a large Conservative majority would strengthen the Government's hand in getting a good Brexit deal and provide "strong and stable leadership in the national interest".

"The prime minister's attempt to dodge scrutiny shows how she holds the public in contempt", he said.

Mr Corbyn said the Prime Minister's surprise decision to call an election on June 8, nearly three years earlier than the next scheduled ballot, would give the people the chance to vote for a government that will put the "majority first".

Pence keeps spotlight on Korean Peninsula
He said the USA plans to strengthen its presence in the Asia-Pacific region and remained dedicated to the protection of Japan. Nevertheless, the USA reportedly directed two additional aircraft carrier groups toward the Korean Peninsula this week.

May ended by stressing another main campaign point: that she wants a significant majority so as to push through her plans for Brexit.

There were calls for TV broadcasters to "empty chair" Theresa May in election-time leaders' debates, after sources close to the Prime Minister indicated she will refuse to take part.

A Sky Data poll suggests that 64 per cent of Britons believe there should be televised debates between party leaders during the General Election campaign.

May is capitalising on her runaway lead in the opinion polls.

May's governing Conservatives now have a slight majority, with 330 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons.

MPs will be voting later on Wednesday on whether to trigger an early election on 8 June. Opposition parties have officially welcomed May's announcement, and while there will be some resistance, she is expected to get the backing she needs. And a month ago, she told her spokesperson to rule out a General Election, and that wasn't true either. Rebels in May's party have opposed her on all these policy areas since she replaced David Cameron last July.

The European Union dismissed an effort by the U.K.to keep the bloc's banking and drugs regulators in London after Brexit, declaring Britain will have "no say" in the agencies' new locations.

"The people of the north clearly voted to see their future in the European Union in the referendum last June".

May has repeatedly said that "now is not the time" for a Scottish vote.
