United changes crew booking policy after passenger dragged off plane

It's been a bumpy PR ride for United Airlines, but this one really stings. United Continental CEO Oscar Munoz's initial attempts to apologize were roundly criticized. The airline needed to make room for four employees of a partner airline, meaning United sought four volunteers to get off the plane.

It said the new policy would ensure that a situation in which a passenger is forcibly removed from a plane does not occur again.

"I was appalled at how United Airlines and the officers handled the situation, but I was also encouraged by my fellow passengers" attempts to interfere - despite how helpless we all felt, " said Powell.

The new policy says crews traveling on United aircraft must be booked at least 60 minutes before a flight's scheduled departure.

UNITED Airlines failed to remove Dr David Dao's luggage from a flight they dragged him off and then sent it to the wrong address, his lawyer says.

Other passengers on Flight 3411 are heard saying, "Please, my God", "What are you doing?" When that did not work, United offered $800 per passenger to relinquish their seat.

Dao suffered a concussion and a broken nose, and will undergo reconstructive surgery after losing two front teeth, Demetrio said.

Carrie was a significant part of that story - that was something she very much wanted and we very much wanted. " Breathe.

"I have learned from various airlines that they have begun to reexamine how many people they will overbook when they overbook a flight, what their policies will be, how they will handle getting people to voluntarily give up their seats in exchange for compensation." he said.

United faced national outrage over its treatment of a passenger who refused to give up his seat on an overbooked flight last weekend.

That was the second-best rate among USA airlines.

For comparison, United involuntarily denied boarding at more than four times that rate per passenger enplaned, or 3,765 times. He also said a civil lawsuit is likely. At some point, he went limp, and the officer dragged him off the plane. The airline doesn't want to ask for volunteers after people are already in their seats.

The union for the airline's pilots issued a statement Thursday seeking to distance them from the incident, pointing out that it happened on a United Express carrier that is "separately owned and operated by Republic Airline" and that United pilots weren't flying the jet.

Out of annual earnings of approximately $4.4 billion, if Delta were to pay each of the bounced passengers the newly proposed maximum of $9,950, they would incur a cost of $12 million.
