US FCC head opposes plan to allow cell phone use on planes

U.S Federal Communications Commission delivers his keynote speech at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

He concluded that today's action to kill the plan was a victory for all USA citizens who "value a moment of quiet at 30,000 feet". Under the FCC proposal, airlines would have decided if they allowed mobile phone conversations during flights.

Republican Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai proposed on Monday to drop an Obama-era plan to allow in-flight cell phone calls in the USA, citing widespread opposition.

Back in 2013, the FCC declared support for dropping the ban on phone calls on airplanes, which was put into effect in 1991.

Today, Pai stated that the original plan from the FCC was "ill-conceived" and was not in the public's best interest.

The decision, issued by President Donald Trump's appointed FCC chairman Ajit Pai, places a halt to a proceeding started by the previous administration that would have relaxed the current prohibition on placing calls while in the air.

Using phones for texting and Internet use will still be allowed.

Wheeler's proposal received extensive criticism and the FCC never finalized it.

NEW YORK (AP) - Federal regulators aim to maintain the ban on in-flight cellular calls.

The Department of Transportation said in December that the FCC might not have jurisdiction over in-flight calls if they are made via Wi-Fi, however, Fortune reported.

Imagine a fellow airplane passenger sitting next to you and yelling into his mobile phone for six hours during a cross-country flight.

Still, the 2013 initiative sparked protests from groups representing flight attendants, and members of Congress who objected to allowing voice calls on flights.

While rules on smart phone usage during flights have eased during the past few years, passengers shouldn't expect to chat to their friends or colleagues during a long flight any time soon.
