US, Mexico and Canada Launch Joint Bid to Host 2026 World Cup

Canada Mexico and the United States have officially announced a joint bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The three soccer federations announced a bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup.

"We announce our bid to bring the World Cup back to the United States, to Canada and Mexico in 2026", Gulati announced on the 102nd floor observatory of the World Trade Center in Manhattan.

Mexico also have experience in this area, though, having hosted it in 1970 and 1986, while Canada hosted the 2015 Women's World Cup.

If successful, it would be the first World Cup to be held in three countries and only the second multi-nation tournament following Japan and South Korea in 2002.

The U.S. previously bid to host the 2022 World Cup solo, only to lose out to Qatar.

"We have the full support of the United States government in this project", Gulati said. He added that the president of the United States is fully supportive and encouraged them to have the joint bid.

The U.S., Canada and Mexico have settled on an unprecedented answer to that question: just combine forces.

Last month, Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino raised concerns about an American World Cup bid over the Trump administration's travel ban of Muslim-majority countries. Trump's politics are important to this bid.

Should the joint bid win out, Canada could also benefit from infrastructure improvements to training fields for teams that stage their tournament bases here.

"It makes our bid stronger, in terms of the 209 members that eventually decide", Gulati said.

Infantino has warned that nations considering bidding for the World Cup must allow any team who qualifies, and their supporters, access to the country.

The 10 April announcement by the three CONCACAF member nations was made at One World Observatory in NY on the 102nd and top floors of the One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

"We don't believe that sport can solve all the issues of the world", he said.

"I think it's safe to say both countries would have liked to host more".

This is a milestone day for U.S. Soccer and for CONCACAF. Winning a bid is also about coalition buidling among Federation Internationale de Football Association members, having additional allies in Mexico and Canada could help swing the vote in this bid's favor.

The World Cup has never been hosted by three countries - Japan and South Korea shared the honors in 2002 - but most of the tournament would take place in the US, where 60 of the 80 games are scheduled to be played, with Canada and Mexico splitting the other 20 games evenly.

The three North American countries will face their stiffest competition from Colombia which has expressed interest in making a bid since 2010. Ultimately, this will still predominantly be a US -led effort. The U.S has been to 10, including one as host (1994). The US will host 60 games and Canada and Mexico will host the other 20 games. Through FIFA's continental rotation system, the 2026 host is expected to come from CONCACAF which has not hosted the World Cup since the United States had the honor in 1994.

That sense of certainty hardened past year, when FIFA's council ruled that neither Europe nor Asia would be eligible to run for the 2026 tournament on the grounds that the regions are hosting the next two World Cups. South America (Brazil) hosted in 2014, and Africa (South Africa) four years before that.
