The World Cup has never been hosted by three countries - Japan and South Korea shared the honors in 2002 - but most of the tournament would take place in the US, where 60 of the 80 games are scheduled to be played, with Canada and Mexico splitting the other 20 games evenly.
The three North American countries will face their stiffest competition from Colombia which has expressed interest in making a bid since 2010. Ultimately, this will still predominantly be a US -led effort. The U.S has been to 10, including one as host (1994). The US will host 60 games and Canada and Mexico will host the other 20 games. Through FIFA's continental rotation system, the 2026 host is expected to come from CONCACAF which has not hosted the World Cup since the United States had the honor in 1994.
That sense of certainty hardened past year, when FIFA's council ruled that neither Europe nor Asia would be eligible to run for the 2026 tournament on the grounds that the regions are hosting the next two World Cups.
