'Work Hard to Live Long,' Says World's Oldest Woman Violet Brown

Brown told The Associated Press she is surprised but grateful to have lived this long.

Sitting next to her then 95-year-old son, Harold Fairweather, who is believed to be the world's oldest living child with a parent alive, Brown also reflected on her love for her late husband, who died almost four decades ago. When he died in 1997, Brown took over her husband's job and received high praise from local government officials for her meticulous work. The 117-year-old woman living in the hills of western Jamaica is believed to have become the world's oldest.

Her son Harold Fairweather, 97, also hit the genetic jackpot.

The Italian Morano was also aged 117 years old but was born a few months earlier on November 29, 1899.

Violet Mosses Brown, who was born four months after Emma Morano, lives in Jamaica and comes from the same area as Olympic gold medal victor Usain Bolt.

The oldest known person living in America is Pennsylvanian Delphine Gibson, 113, the 12th oldest person worldwide.

The Waldensia-Trittonville Circuit of Baptist Churches honored Mosse-Brown as "their extra-precious super-centenarian whom they affectionately call Sister Vie or Sister Brown" during a celebration of her then-116 years of life, according to the January 2017 edition of the Jamaica Baptist Reporter.

As for diet, a caretaker told the Jamaica Observer previous year: 'She likes fish and mutton and sometimes she will have cow foot, but she does not eat pork or chicken.' She also likes sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, breadfruit, and fruits, especially oranges and mangoes.

It was only in her later years that she was able to purchase her own property to plant sugarcane, explains the foundation. She remembers when the first cars and planes came to Jamaica, as well as the first electricity and piped water.

Baptised at 13, she was born in the Duanvale district of Trelawny, Jamaica. But the Guinness Book of World Records says it is still researching a 'number of candidates, ' according to the New York Daily News. The vast majority are women.
