Zola resigns as Birmingham slip close to drop zone

The former Chelsea star stepped down in the aftermath on Monday's 2-0 Tournament defeat at home to Burton Albion - a outcome that makes Birmingham just three points over the relegation zone with three matches left.

The Italian took charge in December with Blues seventh in the Championship, but won only two of his 24 matches in charge in all competitions.

The Blues come into this game in eighteen place and will be hoping to get three points to help them climb away from the danger zone at the bottom of the table.

Cries of "We want Zola out" rang round St Andrews as disgruntled Birmingham fans voices their opinion to the board and to the Premier League legend.

Zola had been in his third management spell in England after previous coaching stints with Watford and West Ham.

Burton completed the season double over Birmingham thanks to goals in either half from Lloyd Dyer and Lucas Akins, with Blues turning in another disjointed display.

The result leaves them worryingly close to the bottom three and with only three matches for Zola's replacement to turn things round - starting with Sunday's trip to Aston Villa.

Birmingham beat local rivals Wolves 2-1 at Molineux in February but have picked up just four point sin nine games since.
