18 frat members, frat, charged in Penn State student's death

And Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity said in a statement, "The nature of those charges are incredibly disheartening as the organization and its membership continue to grieve Tim's passing and the pain experienced by his family".

Scicchitano testified to the discovery of a "wealth of information" showing an active attempt to hide or destroy evidence after Piazza was taken from the fraternity house.

But in the midst of all this, come criminal charges against 18 fraternity members and the fraternity, itself for a hazing death. They had bought over a thousand dollars in alcohol - vodka, beer, wine and potent malt beverage Four Loko - for this particular party, according to receipts.

According to the report, Piazza, adhering to his responsibilities as a new pledge, got dangerously drunk and wound up falling down a flight of stairs, which did not escape the notice of his brothers-to-be: almost 11 hours before a fraternity member called 911 the following morning, several brothers were already chatting about the incident over group text. "He fell 15 feet down a flight of stairs, hair-first, going to need help".

It was stated that Piazza fell multiple times during the night but none of the frat members contacted emergency services.

From there, the pledges had to drink from a wine bag while fraternity brothers poured beer on them.

"They said, 'no, you're over reacting, you don't know what you're talking about", Davis says. Later, Piazza tried to stand but fell, hitting his head on the floor. Videos show Piazza unable to open a door and needing help to walk.

One time, when Piazza rolled off a couch, three fraternity brothers picked him up and "slammed him" back on the couch, according to the grand jury report.

The fraternity brothers communicated through a group messaging system, which showed that the day after the party, Young, the president, instructed another member to clean the basement and get rid of any traces of alcohol.

One of the brothers said they needed to take Piazza to the hospital, but the others told him to leave the room, according to the report.

Piazza was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. February 4 in the surgical Intensive Care Unit of Hershey Medical Center. Frat members communicated through the "GroupMe" application and discussed deleting online conversations before they talked to authorities.

Penn State President Eric Barron called what happened to Timothy Piazza "inhumane treatment".

"The grand jury, Parks Miller said, has instructed her office to prepare a report and recommendations to go to the state legislature, Penn State and other entities on how to avoid such tragedy in the future. I just don't know what I'm liable for as president".

The frat house where the hazing too place - and where Timothy Piazza would die.

On Mar. 30, Penn State permanently shut down the fraternity because of the consistent pattern of this conduct. About 17% of all PSU students are a part of Greek life.

A lawyer for the Piazza family, Tom Kline, issued a statement saying Penn State and fraternities have created a "culture of permissiveness".

"All indicators suggested Beta Theta Phi was a model fraternity - the house, privately-owned and situated like all other fraternity houses on private property, was handsome, the subject of a multi-million dollar renovation; both the Beta alumni and the national organization provided strict rules of behavior; and, the brothers had a no alcohol policy which stated that anyone caught drinking would be expelled", Barron said.
