5 people hospitalized after eating gas station nacho cheese

Lavinia Kelly California Woman Hospitalized For Weeks After Putting Gas Station Nacho Cheese On Her Doritos

One woman has botulism from eating cheese at a gas station in California.

A bad story out of Sacramento: Five people, including a 33-year-old mother of three, have been hospitalized with botulism - poisoning from botulinum bacteria - after eating nacho cheese sauce from a gas station deli area several weeks ago.

Health officials believe that the illness among the five people was caused by the nacho cheese at the gas station.

Investigations are ongoing as to what caused the illness, but officials are now putting it down to a batch of nacho cheese.

Reports state that the Sacramento health officials are also looking into four cases which may be linked with these cases. When Kelly wants to see who has entered the room, he and other loved ones lift her eyelids open, sometimes using tape to keep them up.

Lavinia Kelly remains on a ventilator in intensive care in Sacramento after being sickened at an area gas station.

Since then, she has been hospitalized and spent her 33rd birthday on Wednesday in intensive care being treated for botulism, a rare paralytic illness.

Officials have since taken the business' permit to sell food and drinks. "I've never seen my sister not have function of her body or be able to communicate", Theresa Kelly said.

Kelly is one of nine people who ate the nacho cheese sauce and came down with botulism poisoning or are suspected of having been poisoned by the botulism toxin. She bought a bag of Doritos and drizzled nacho cheese on them.

'Only human mistakes create the environment for botulinum toxin to form, ' Clark said.

Kelly, who was turning 33 on May 17, was driving home from work as an inventory manager on April 21 when she pulled over at the gas station's small market for a snack.

It usually occurs in foods that aren't refrigerated properly.

"Thank God that we know she can recover", Theresa said.

"The source of the food product may be unrelated to the gas station", he added. "That's an essential question".

In 2015, 39 of 199 confirmed total cases of botulism were food-borne, according to the Centers for Disease Control's most recent National Botulism Surveillance Summary [PDF].

Employees at the gas station have not responded to questioning for comment and what caused the toxin to be spread has not been reported. Clark did say, "They're acquiring astounding medical bills".
