Abbott: Texas 'Sanctuary Cities' Law Won't Spark Racial Profiling

SB 4's mandate to turn local law enforcement into Trump's deportation force has drawn overwhelming opposition from a broad coalition of constituencies.

Elected officials announced they are exploring legal options against Senate Bill 4 (SB4) at a rally outside the state capitol building Tuesday, ABC affiliate KVUE reported. In addition, this alert applies to all encounters with federal, state, county law enforcement including local police and sheriffs. "But we are sending a strong message today alongside community organizations which is, instead of caving in, the governor is going to get a summer of resistance".

Democratic politicians from several major Texas cities said they will band together to challenge the state's anti-sanctuary cities law, starting what could become a protracted court battle over the controversial measure. "Just as federal judges struck down intentionally discriminatory redistricting and photo ID schemes pushed by Abbott, the MALC will once again hold the State of Texas accountable in court." said Dallas State Representative Rafael Anchía, chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus. "The time to take action is now, and the first step in a journey of resistance is defeating an unconstitutional law".

He said, "What this legislation does is say to me and my team that we don't have the authority to keep our [officers] focused on criminals". The police chiefs of virtually every other large city in Texas (Dallas, Arlington, Houston, San Antonio, and Fort Worth) have gone on record via local newspapers to voice their disapproval of the bill and the motivation behind it. And on Monday, El Paso County commissioners voted to pursue legal action against the state. "Frankly this bill is like a bad law school exam where students have to find as many constitutional violations as possible - trust me, the bill is that bad".

"Travis County is a safe and law-abiding community". "Nearly 80 percent of my constituents are Hispanic in District I", he said.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Council Members Ann Kitchen, Leslie Pool, Jimmy Flannigan, Alison Alter, Delia Garza, Katie Tovo, Travis County Constable Stacy Suits, and County Judge Sarah Eckhardt joined the event. "Our job is to defend the interests and values of the people of Travis County".

"I have to preserve the work of these fearless leaders in Austin", said Philip Kingston, a member of Dallas City Council. "I am shocked by his preemptive attack on Austin for having the temerity to demand equal treatment for its citizens, and I do not intend to let Austin go it alone".

Earlier this month Gov. Greg Abbott signed SB 4 into law with little advance notice, broadcasting its signing live on Facebook. Additionally, MALDEF and the Lawyers for America offered up their legal help to any city or public official punished for violating SB 4.
