BC Election 'too close to call'

According to the latest survey, the Grits and NDP are tied at 39% apiece.

"Tonight, we have elected an extraordinary group of New Democrats", John Horgan declared to a packed election night party, after noting it was too soon to know who would be forming the next government of British Columbia.

Clark's Liberals won 43 of the 87 seats in the legislature, while the NDP had secured 41.

Going into the vote, the Liberals were neck-and-neck in the polls with the opposition NDP, whose campaign promise to make life more affordable in a province that is home to Canada's most expensive real estate appeared to have resonated with voters.

Angolano said that electoral precedent has been set previously in Ontario in the 1980s with the NDP propping up a Liberal provincial government, and federally when the NDP stood behind the Pierre Trudeau government in 1974. Peter Fassbender, another cabinet minister, also lost his seat in Surrey-Fleetwood. Two seats were added after the 2013 election.

The chance of the Green party holding the balance of power in a minority government situation was a possibility.

"Constitutionally, the federal government might have the upper hand. but the B.C. government could force significant delays", he said.

The source, who is in the premier's office, says Lt. -Gov.

That riding would be Port Moody-Coquitlam, which saw Liberal candidate Linda Reimer narrowly beating popular Port Moody mayor Joe Trasolini by just 437 votes.

The softwood lumber dispute "really provided an opportunity for the premier to stay on her message of jobs for the resource sector", said Gerald Baier, University of British Columbia political science professor. "We have a lot of folks in our Valley that go down south and we caught a lot of them before they left, and they mail-in their ballots, and there's a lot to count, and with nine votes in the mix I think it's worth waiting for".

The campaign began four weeks ago with Liberal Leader Christy Clark and the NDP's John Horgan locked in a tight race to be premier, and Green Leader Andrew Weaver hoping to build upon his one seat in the legislature. That included almost 164,000 valid student votes, and just over 6,300 rejected votes from students across B.C.

"British Columbians voted today to get big money out of politics", Horgan said.

Lyle noted both the NDP and Greens were against the LNG and Site C dam megaprojects, while the future of the Trans Mountain pipeline project may also be cast in doubt.

As I write this, there is some speculation that the Greens could hold the balance of power if neither the B.C. Liberals nor the NDP are able to secure a majority victory. The province allows unlimited corporate and union donations and the RCMP is investigating fundraising by the province's political parties. With more than four-in-ten voters choosing to abstain in the past few BC elections, this can have a substantial impact on the results.

One of Clark's surprise moves during the campaign was to pledge to ban or tax out of viability USA thermal coal exports through B.C. ports in retaliation for US duties on softwood lumber.

The B.C. Liberals ended up returning almost $60,000 in improperly reported donations, dating back to 2011, and revising their annual financial reports going back to 2005 to correct the sources of another $40,000. "I think about the immigrant who came from Europe after the second world war and got a job as a chambermaid these are stories of British Columbia", says Clark.
