Cannes apologizes for projection snafu with Netflix's 'Okja'

This is a unusual thing to happen at the usually "methodically run" Cannes-although the festival's audiences have a long history of booing the films that premiere there-but nothing about Netflix's debut at the film festival has been normal.

Okja, starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal, is one of the hottest movies at this year's festival but controversial because USA video-on-demand company Netflix has refused to screen it in French cinemas.

But the whistling, booing and jeering started before the movie. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton.

Journalist Philippe Dupuy tweeted this video from inside the screening room when the film was stopped. Netflix's logo was booed by some at Friday's screening. Movie stopped, ' IndieWire's David Ehrlich said.

Blogger Elena Lazic said: "That didn't start well".

She also stars in the second season of TV crime series Top Of The Lake, which will be screened in full before the festival closes on May 28. They go to the movies twice a week, and they watch Netflix. "But there was also some cheering at the same time and a warm round of applause at the end". A young girl named Mija tries to stop a multi-national company from kidnapping Okja, who happens to be her best friend.

For 10 years, Mija (An Seo Hyun) has been a companion and caretaker to Okja at her home in the mountains of South Korea.

Bong Joon-Ho won fans worldwide for his 2006 monster blockbuster "The Host".

We've seen little teaser and hints of Netflix's buzzed about film Okja. That is unusual for a director, ' he said.

"I think it's an enormous and really interesting conversation that's just beginning". The film later restarted without any further technical problems.

Even an inexperienced movie director would have said the symbolism was too heavy-handed.

In contrast, The Meyerowitz Stories follows the various members of an estranged American family as they meet in NY to celebrate the artistic achievements of their father. And Bong praised the company's support: "I loved working with Netflix...and giving a [considerable] budget to a director isn't very common - it was a wonderful experience".

For all the internal Cannes drama, it's unlikely the controversy will actually have much effect on Netflix's release of the film, which has been highly-anticipated. But the law in France requires that films be available in theaters for at least three years before they can be streamed online. "Netflix has given Bong Jong-ho the chance to make his absolutely liberated vision a reality, and for that I'm so grateful".
