Civil rights lawyer poised to be Philadelphia DA

Michael Twiggs canvasses voters on primary election day as part of a project run by the American Civil Liberties Union in Philadelphia Tuesday

In a report on the reaction that prosecutors in the District Attorney's Office have had to Krasner's primary victory, the Philadelphia Daily News said "many of its 600 employees were dismayed by [Krasner's] platform". That's why Tuesday's upset in the race for district attorney in Philadelphia is such a big deal.

"They need to have hope, they need to have a reason not to walk out the door and hang out with the guys in the corner, become part of a gang, pick up a gun and put blood on the street", Krasner said. The victor of the Democratic primary will be a heavy favorite in the fall given the party's near lock on city elections. He has defended Black Lives Matter and Occupy Philadelphia protesters and has defended death penalty cases for a quarter century. After his nomination, McNesby told Philly.com Krasner "would be catastrophic to the police department and the community". He will face the only Republican candidate, Beth Grossman, in the fall.

Krasner says he has spoken with Police Commissioner Richard Ross and is confident they can work together.

Krasner attended public school before studying at the University of Chicago and Stanford Law School.

Larry Krasner, a Democrat, has never worked as a prosecutor but enjoyed almost $1.5 million in campaign funding from liberal billionaire George Soros. "We have a really diverse pool of people who have worked hard to raise a lot of money".

Yet Krasner noted that people as far apart as independent Vermont U.S. Sen. "They are people who understand that the war on drugs was a failure, that mass incarceration is a disgrace and a national problem and that we have to go in a different direction".

"I think there are going to be a lot of candidates across the country who are viewed as the opposite of Donald Trump, the opposite of Jeff Sessions", Krasner said. Of course, in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans seven to one, Krasner has a hefty chance of being elected Philly's next DA, taking over the role from Seth Williams, who has been in the position for seven years and is now under federal investigation. He has pleaded not guilty.
