Duggar Sisters File Privacy Suit Against City, Magazine

Jill Jessa Joy Jinger Duggar TLC

According to the AP, the four sisters who came forward about being inappropriately touched by their brother years ago, claim that when they spoke to investigators in 2006 about the molestation, "they were assured their statements would only be shared with police and child service officials". However, Gawker found information on the Duggar family's homeschooling curriculum created through the ministries of Bill Gothard (also accused of sexually abusing young women and girls) - including that the victims are blamed for their own assaults and told that they must forgive if they hope to find favor with God. According to the sisters, the release of the documents violated their right to privacy as minors involved in a sexual misconduct case.

Four relatives tied to a sexual-abuse investigation into Josh Duggar are suing authorities in Arkansas as well as a magazine publisher, claiming that they improperly released sensitive information.

The Duggars' lawsuit is one involving public figures who are famous for holding a certain set of values and supposedly living a specific lifestyle. The lawsuit alleges the city gave the magazine an under-redacted report that included the names of the sisters' parents, the family's address, and the age of at least one of the victims, which allowed the public to identify the four sisters. According to the lawsuit, they are seeking relief and damages for invasion of privacy. The Duggar sisters added in the lawsuit that the release of the documents and publication of stories based on the documents by In Touch magazine led to undue scrutiny and victimization of their family. That was after an anonymous tipster reported the girls had been molested by their brother. Duggar Sisters Sue Cops & "In Touch Weekly" for Releasing Josh Molestation Reports https://t.co/JqJQD4p6dT - TMZ (@TMZ) May 18, 2017 The tabloid first broke the news of the Duggar family's molestation case in May of 2015.

As a result, the Duggars' show, "19 Kids and Counting", was canceled, and Josh entered a rehab program.

Two of the sisters, Dillard and Seewald, are now featured in the reality television show, "Jill & Jessa: Counting On", that debuted in March, 2016 on TLC.

The Duggar sisters are reportedly suing not only city and police officials but also county officials and the publishers of In Touch.

In its report, In Touch did not identify Josh's victims by name. They claim in the federal suit that investigators promised them confidentiality. The City of Springdale has responded with a very strongly worded statement, describing the lawsuit as a case of the Duggar sisters "seeking....taxpayer dollars".
