France's Macron to unveil list of candidates for new party

"Yesterday a new French president was elected".

Macron, 39, has promised to rejuvenate France's jaded governing class by bringing more people into parliament who, like him, have never held elected office. But if he fails, populism, nationalism and protectionism will soon be resurgent.

Le Pen, whom the chief rabbi of France and the CRIF umbrella of Jewish communities have decried as risky to democracy and minorities, received 34.2 percent of the vote compared to the 65.8 percent for the centrist candidate, Emmanuel Macron, according to a report by Le Monde based on exit polls from Sunday's final round of the elections.

The Republicans, the main center-right party whose candidate like that of the Socialists was eliminated in a first vote for president on April 23, were preparing on Wednesday to unveil a policy platform that softens some of the hardline measures it was proposing during the presidential campaign. That means that nearly half of French voters want to smash "the system".

How hard could it be for Mr Macron to govern?

The chances of failure are quite high. He faces his own challenge finding a parliamentary majority.

The tasks of reform at home and in Europe are linked.

To discuss the victory of Emmanuel Macron and the future of France following the contentious election, CGTN's Elaine Reyes spoke to Michael Kimmage, Transatlantic Academy Fellow for the German Marshall Fund.

The Springfield Police Department held their annual police memorial ceremony Wednesday as part of National Police Week . Deborah Bell of the Virginia Attorney General's Office expressed condolences to families of fallen officers.

Mr Macron's domestic political base is also fragile. Politicians from the traditional parties in France have taken on the air of survivors from a ship-wreck following Macron's triumph which in particular dealt a death blow to the Socialists.

PARIS (AP) - French ex-Premier Manuel Valls suggested Tuesday that he wants to abandon France's Socialist party and run in June parliamentary elections under the banner of the president-elect's centrist political movement. As a former minister in a Socialist government, he could send a bold signal by appointing a prime minister from the opposite political tribe, the centre right. Much will depend on whether his party can form a stable coalition.

The problem of opposition on the streets will be real and will have to be faced down.

The vote was the best electoral result ever obtained by her National Front party, which was established in the 1970s by her father, the Holocaust denier Jean-Marie Le Pen, who has multiple convictions for inciting racial hatred against Jews.

"We can only hope that France seizes its chance", Parisian Michael Jeuga said on Monday.

As I mentioned after the first round, a common refrain during the recent International Monetary Fund meetings was the idea that, with the electoral challenge from radical populists in the Netherlands and France defeated, and assuming continuity in German elections this fall, Europe would be ready to make a strong push towards greater European integration, most importantly on economic issues.

During his election campaign, Macron had described Brexit as a "crime" that would deliver Britain to "servitude".

On the other hand, Macron himself directed a message to American scientists and researchers that many would categorize as dark comedy.

Emmanuel Macron now becomes France's youngest leader since Napoleon Bonaparte, whose battles are commemorated at the Arc de Triomphe.
